Indian-African Roots, Award-Winning Chef Story
My entire life, I have been immersed in Indian and African Culture. My great grandparents were born in India and they moved to Tanzania. That is where I was born. Even though I was born in Africa, my lineage is from the Gujarat region of India.
My name, Saibeen (pronounced Sigh-Bean), comes from Indian roots and means "Our Lady".
After immigrating to Canada as a child, my mother started teaching me how to utilize all of the spices, ingredients, and techniques that she learned from her mother as well as her friends in Africa. My passion for cooking was evident and I started cooking entire meals for my family when I was 9. As an adult, I started cooking meals for my community and delivering them to those who needed them.
My love for cooking and serving helped me gain confidence in my cooking, continuing to learn additional regions of Indian and African cuisines, and practicing with every dish I made—whether it was through catering or my family's restaurant in Calgary.
After moving to Great Falls, I started serving my community again—first for women's groups, then out of the kitchen of Pizzaz, in downtown Great Falls, using the same techniques my mother and family had taught me.
Saibeen's Kitchen officially opened our own location in January of 2018. After a couple of moves around town, I am now able to utilize the spacious kitchen and dining area located on the second floor in the Columbus Center.
Along with the restaurant, I also offer catering, occasional food delivery to Helena, and cooking classes, when time allows. I love bringing unique, and made-from-scratch meals from my kitchen to you and I am thankful for the opportunity to share my passion with my community!
